Gabrielle Chanel born in Saumur, France on the 18th August 1883, brought
up in an orphanage. Established fashion shop in Deauville. Moves to 31
rue Cambon, Paris in 1918. In 1924 The Chanel Perfume Company was formed. ‘Coco’ Chanel
died on 10th January 1971. All Chanel perfumes appear in the signature
Chanel bottle based on the original Sem design. Successor is Karl Lagerfeld.
Bought by Wertheimer Family of Germany in c1995. Christopher Sheldrake
appointed director of research and development for its fragrance division
on 1st December 2005, reporting to in-house perfumer Jacques Polge. He
was previously a perfumer with ICI-owned Quest International.

Created by Ernest Beaux; a soft classical floral aldehyde parfum classified B5f, with top notes of fresh floral such as ylang-ylang and neroli; heart notes of jasmine and rose on a base of sandalwood and vetiver. The perfume consists of some 130 ingredients. Presented in a bottle designed by Sem. In 1986 the edt was strengthened to take advantage of new wider perfume elements, still the world’s top selling fragrance. The French actress Carole Bouquet was the ‘face’ of 'No 5' in 1986. The 05.05.2005 was the 50th anniversary of the launch of No 5; a special limited edition was presented |
