In 1840 an American, William Sparks Thomson commenced business as a corset maker, his son was a chemist and joined father in 1842; he came up with the idea of creating lavender smelling salts to revive Ladies who fainted as a result of his father's tight corsets. The Perfumery Company was established in 1872 in New Bond Street, London; first fragrance was 'Crab Apple Blossom' launched in 1865. Specialized in creating individual perfumes for clients from a ‘library’ of more than 4000 scents, the largest in the world. Its clients have been Greta Garbo and Charlie Chapman; in 2001 it opened an ‘Haute Parfum Salon’ with the famous ‘nose’ Anthony Pettifer in attendance. Closed in 2004
