Oldest French perfume house, only pre-dated by J Floris Ltd of London. Established in 1775 in Paris by Jean-Francois Houbigant(1752 - 1807) then aged 23 as a ‘glover and perfumer’. Passed into Houbigant’s son in 1807, then to his partner Chardin. Sold toilette waters, powders, and scented gloves to Marie Antoinette, perfume to Napoleon, and was appointed royal perfumer to Queen Victoria and the Tsar of Russia. Still has main premises at 19 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honore, Paris. Long and complicated ownership - filed for bankruptcy in 1993, was acquired (along with Dana) by Renaissance Cosmetics in 1994. Renaissance filed for Chapter 11 in 1999; its brands were acquired by New Dana Perfumes, later renamed Dana Classic Fragrances |
