Born François-Joseph-Marie Sportorno in Ajaccio Corsica in 1874.
In 1900 moves to 23 place Vendome, Paris. 1904 adopts variation of his
mother's name Coti, into Coty to sound more Parisian chic. Starts The
House of Coty in 1905 in a two-roomed perfume shop. Launched over 50
fragrances from 1905 till his death in 1934. Vincent Robert takes over
as chief perfumer; daughter Christiane. In 1939 quoted on New York Stock
Exchange, run by Beauty International a division of European Brands Group
Ltd. the majority owner. In 1992 Benckiser Corp (part of the Pfizer Corp)
buys Coty and in 1998 establishes a $15m state-of-the-art factory in
Pudong, China (2003). Other brand names and subsidiaries; Adidas, Calgon,
Chicago, Chopard, Chanson d'Eau, Claire, cutex, Davidoff, Gisele Denis,
The Healing Garden, Jil Sander, Joop!, Jovan (Quintessence), Lancaster,
Margaret Astor, Man & Woman, Pierre Robert, Route 66, Rimmel, Sensiq,
Stetson, Isabella Rossellini, Vanilla Fields, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez,
Kenneth Cole, Vivienne Westwood and Tue-Sai Kan. n 2005 buys Unilever's
fragrance business, folded into Coty's Lancaster Group Worldwide; included
are Unilever fragrance brands Calvin Klein, Cerruti, Vera Wang, Chloe,
and Lagerfeld, and re-named Coty Prestige
