Nina Ricci; born Maria Adelaide Nielli in
Turin in 1883, went to France in 1895 with her elder sister to seek her
fortune; became apprenticed to a dressmaker; met and married Luigi Ricci,
the marriage was not a success as he found it very hard to compete with
his dynamic wife. His early death in 1909 drew her closer to her infant
son Robert who had been born in 1905. She joined Maisón Raffin
a highly regarded couture with whom she was with for 20 years. When it
closed in 1929 Nina more or less retired to a life of luxury until she
met her second husband who ran an advertising agency. Together with Robert,
Nina now aged 49, joined forces and formed Maisón Nina Ricci in
Paris in 1932. First perfume 'Cœur-Joie' launched in 1946 to celebrate
the end of the war. Nina died in 1970 and Robert in 1992. In 1995 it was
56.8% owned by Sanofi Beauté; in 1998 it became part of Puig Group.

‘peace and love’ after the Second World War but due to the
advertising showing doves nuzzling young girls or being fed by young girls,
it has come to stand for purity and virginity.
