Chamade Maisón Guerlain
1969
The name means either ‘wild heart beats’ or ‘ the drum beats surrender’; a homage to Françoise Sagan’s novel La Chamade. Claimed it seven years to perfect; created by Jean-Paul Guerlain; a crisp green floral-oriental aldehyde parfum with top notes of galbanum, heart notes of rose, jasmine, muguet, clove and Spanish lilac; on base notes of vetiver, benzoin, sandalwood, vanilla, balsam of Peru and balsam of Tolu, classified F1f.
Presented in a clear cut flacon designed by Raymond Guerlain in conjunction with Robert Granai in the shape of a stylised shell with pointed stopper; inspired by Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’.
The name was taken from the film which starred Catherine Deneuve, a great favourite of Jean-Paul; who starred in the film La Chamade which was based on the novel by Françoise Sagan.
It is reported that Jean-Paul mused that he created it with a ‘very, very beautiful’ woman in mind, whose name remained a secret
