René Jules Lalique (1860 to 1945) was born in the small village of Ay, France and was raised in both Paris and Ay. Aged 12 he began an apprenticeship with a Parisian goldsmith and later furthered his education at Sydenham Art College in London. He worked as a freelance artist whilst also designing jewelry for esteemed houses such as Cartier and Boucheron. René established his own jewelry business in 1885 and eventually turned his focus from jewelry to glassware with even greater success and established René Lalique et Cie in 1905. The company is now one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of high quality glass crystal at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace. In 1998 the company is run by his grand daughter Marie-Claude Lalique, daughter of Marc Lalique. A separate perfumery house was established in 1992 and also a separate design division, Maison Lalique. After René's death items were only signed 'Lalique', the 'R' being dropped. In February 2008 the company was bought by Art & Fragrances (Swiss luxury beauty company) for 44m euros and integrated as a legally independent subsidiary. |
